UMEMPS 2016

Welcome Note

Dear Colleagues,

It is a great pleasure to announce that the 37th UMEMPS congress is now heading towards its final stage. Last year the congress was held in Athens, Greece, and the year before that in Antalya, Turkey. For the forthcoming years we anticipate that the congress will be held in Fez, Morocco and in Italy.

We hope that this year’s congress which will take place in Cyprus between the 4th and 6th of November, will serve as a memory landmark for the island’s scientific action. The chosen scientific topics as well as the distinguished speakers can only guarantee a result of high quality. We expect that the congress will be of great interest to many doctors and hence we anticipate a large number of participants. It would be greatly appreciated if we could get the help of the 28 paediatric UMEMPS members on this matter.

We would like to thank the baby-food providers and the pharmaceutical companies for their invaluable help in the development of this congress.

It is important to note that congress implementation would not have been possible without the continuous effort and dedication of the local and international Organising Committees.

We were deeply saddened to hear about the loss of two leading colleagues during the last few months. Prof Hussein Bahaa El-Din, Head of Egyptian Pediatric Association who passed away unexpectedly, and Prof Fethi Bayoud, a Tunisian leading pediatrician who was tragically killed during the Istanbul Airport bombing attacks.

Violence and conflict that are currently affecting various regions of our world have devastating consequences; with civilian population and children becoming the primary victims. The extensive damage to their housing, hospitals and schools has forced hundreds of thousands of people to leave their home countries and become refugees in search of a brighter future.

We truly believe that the willpower of the world’s population, the contribution of all the scientists and especially pediatricians’ sensitivity, may contribute significantly in the alleviation of these problems.

I am looking forward to seeing you and welcoming you all at the beautiful island of Cyprus.

Best wishes,

Michalis Iasonides

President of UMEMPS

Dear Members of the UMEMPS, Dear Colleagues,

In my capacity as the President of the 37th UMEMPS Congress, it is with great pleasure that I welcome you in Cyprus. The Congress returns here 20 years after the first time it was successfully organised on the island.

The Congress' theme "Optimizing holistic paediatric care", has been chosen to reflect upon the constant changes we, as specialists, encounter both at our daily practice and within a scientific spectrum, as well as a society in general, at multiple levels.

Focusing on all areas of paediatrics, we have taken on a promise to provide a scientific programme that will include the most updated and innovative lectures, symposiums and meet-the-expert sessions developed in accordance with the vastly growing medical knowledge. These will be presented through the eyes and expertise of distinguished speakers who will share their knowledge and experience. Furthermore, this Congress will be a unique opportunity for Paediatricians from the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern Countries to meet, network and discuss their common interests.

Besides the main purpose of the Congress, there is plenty for you to enjoy and discover in Cyprus during your staying here: Warm weather, bright sunny days and the endless blue Mediterranean sea, the beauties and history of the island, picturesque traditional wine villages and well known archaeological sites of great significance.

I look forward to welcoming you in our charming and beautiful island for an inspiring experience that we hope to remain memorable to the participants of the 37th UMEMPS Congress.

Nicos Skordis

President of the 37th UMEMPS Congress
